Why measure temperature?

To really master your grill, knowing what’s going on inside the meat you are cooking and what’s going on inside your grill is absolutely key to getting the best possible result. Not only will knowing the temperatures create a better product it is also good practice from a food safety perspective. No one likes a case of food poisoning from undercooked meat.

There is a number of ways for you to monitor your grill temperature and meat temperature. You are really only limited to your budget and the way you would like to have the temperature and data presented.

From the simplest technology like the analogue oven thermometer, simple but effective. These are perfect for monitoring the temperature of the grill but do not allow for any internal temperature monitoring of the meat you are cooking.

For that, you will need one of the many styles of temperature probes that are available.

Temperature Probes

Instant Read style Probes

There are many different styles of probes suitable for measuring internal temperatures of what you are cooking. Price and function will play a big part in your decision process.

Ideally, you want a probe that offers a really quick response time, that way you do not need to have your grill open for too long (losing all that precious heat) and your hands can be out of danger quicker.

I don’t think there are too many grill fans that haven’t lost hairs off their arms before. These type of probes generally range from $15 through to $150 depending on features and brand etc. My recommendation is to go for a product that is in the middle of the pack. Remote Digital Thermometers

This is where it gets super interesting and a little bit geeky. Keeping up with technology some of the latest probes are WIFI /Bluetooth enabled and fully controllable from the comfort of your nearest smart device.  For example, let’s start with the Weber iGrill 2 Thermometer.

This is only one example of a range of really excellent products and brands that are innovating the grilling/BBQ industry. Without these companies investing in the technology side of things, we would not be seeing the quality of food coming from your average cooks. With these devices, you can be free to enjoy the BBQ/party without having to check the grill every five minutes. It gives the consumer incredible confidence to produce food that has their guests raving and wanting more.

Temperature Controller

For some serious control over your grill temperatures, we have devices like the Flame Boss 300. Almost a set and forget device. The technology monitors the temperature of the meat and the grill and by the use of the fan controller, it controls the amount of air being fed to the fire and therefore controlling the heat. Gives you the control of a conventional oven.

The controller monitors the temperature of your smoker and controls a fan that manages the amount of air flowing to the fire, which controls the size of the fire and thus the amount of heat the fire generates.

Ultimate control.

Over time I have researched a number of thermometers for various aspects of grilling. Below you will find a compiled list of the ones I would be prepared to hand over my money and purchase.
